The leaders of the medal standings at the end of the Universiade were the Japanese, who won 37 gold, 27 silver and 37 bronze awards. The second place went to the South Korean team (30-22-30), the host team of the competition, Taiwan, took third place (26-34-30).

The Russian Federation team was represented at the World Universiade by a delegation of 348 athletes who won a total of 101 medals.

The largest number of awards for the Russian national team was brought by Yulia Bravikova, who won four gold and one silver medal in rhythmic gymnastics competitions. The Russian won in the exercises with hoop, clubs, ribbon and in the individual all-around, and took second place in the exercises with the ball. The Russian rhythmic gymnastics team at the Universiade confirmed its status as the best in the world, winning a total of seven gold, four silver and two bronze awards.

The Russian diving team won four gold, three silver and three bronze medals. London Olympic champion Ilya Zakharov won two gold medals at the Universiade: in diving from a three-meter springboard and in synchronized diving from a three-meter springboard, paired with Evgeny Kuznetsov. Nikita Shleikher and Roman Izmailov won gold in synchronized diving from the platform. And the Russian men's team won the team competition in Taipei.

The Russian team was also first in the men's team competition.

The fencers brought two gold medals to the Russian national team: Sergei Bida first won the individual epee competition, and then excelled in the team tournament together with Dmitry Gusev, Alan Fardzinov and Georgy Bruev. Russian foil fighters took three silver and one bronze. Russian swimmers won two gold, five silver and nine bronze medals following their performance at the Universiade. The Russians also missed out on awards in athletics, where the Russian team ultimately did not compete at the Universiade. 11 people applied for participation in the athletics competitions in Taipei, all of them had permission to compete at international competitions in a neutral status from the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). However, in the end they did not go to the competition, since the IAAF and FISU (International University Sports Federation) could not agree that Russian track and field athletes could compete in Taipei under their own flag.

The next World Summer Universiade will be held in 2019 in Naples, Italy.

The 2017 Universiade in Taipei has come to an end, the Russian team at the 29th Summer World University Games took fourth place in the team competition, for the first time since 2001, in terms of the number of gold medals, it was not among the top three teams.

The Universiade lasted from August 19 to 30. During this time, 271 sets of awards were awarded in 21 sports, and more than 7.5 thousand athletes from 144 countries took part in the competitions. The Russian delegation included 348 athletes representing more than one hundred universities in the country, including student athletes from foreign universities.

The Japanese team took first place in the medal standings (37-27-37), the second position was taken by the South Korean team (30-22-30), and the Taiwanese team took third place (26-34-30). The Russian team won 25 gold, 31 silver and 38 bronze medals. In total, the Russians won 94 awards and in the total number of medals they were second only to the Japanese (101).

Russian athletes performed most successfully in rhythmic gymnastics, where they won seven gold, four silver and two bronze medals. They also showed good results in diving (4-3-3), where the country, in particular, was represented by world champions Ilya Zakharov and Evgeny Kuznetsov. The Russian team won the most awards in swimming - 16, but only two of them are gold (2-5-9).

The plight of track and field athletes

The last time the Russian team remained outside the top three was in 2001, when Beijing hosted the Universiade. In the Chinese capital, the Russians also finished fifth, behind the teams of Ukraine, Japan, the USA and China.

President of the Russian Student Sports Union Sergei Seiranov, commenting on the results of the competition, highlighted two reasons why the national team failed to maintain its leading position. The fact that Russian track and field athletes were unable to compete in Taipei was largely hindered. The ongoing suspension of the All-Russian Athletics Federation (ARAF) allowed the Russians to compete at the Universiade only in a neutral status, as happened at the recent World Athletics Championships, but a decision was made to abandon this idea. Although at the last Universiade, which was held in Kazan, track and field athletes brought the Russian team 29 medals, of which 12 were gold. In Taipei, 50 sets of medals were competed for in athletics.

“The second blow is that we knew that China was ignoring the Universiade, but that they would bring such “passengers,” Seyranov said about the second reason. “Imagine table tennis, and the Chinese only have one gold! As a result, all these medals that The Chinese were supposed to conquer (badminton, rollersports, table tennis), and three Asian countries played against each other: Japan, South Korea, Taiwan.”

Well-deserved victories

It was also understandable that the Japanese team, whose capital would host the Summer Olympic Games in three years, wanted to show its best side. “Japan has never shown such an attitude towards the Universiades before,” Seiranov noted. “It’s a shame that in the end they remained in fourth overall team place, everyone worked with great dedication - all members of the national team.”

This was also noted by the country's leadership. Throughout the tournament, the President of Russia noted the contribution to the success of the national team of Universiade winners.

Following the results of the competition, Vitaly Mutko, Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation for Sports, Tourism and Youth Policy, sent a government telegram to the athletes. “You showed your best sporting qualities, confidently fought against worthy opponents, and brought well-deserved medals to Russia,” the telegram said.

Guide to the Summer Universiade 2017

These competitions have their own anthem, mascot and slogan, but there will be no Russian athletes.

Where and when

From August 19 to August 30 in Taipei. Brasilia and Turkish Izmir argued for the right to host the competition. Taiwan is the only country among the candidates that has not previously hosted the Universiade. Brazil hosted the University Games in 1963, and Turkey hosted athletes in 2005. Taipei's application was approved by the International University Sports Federation on November 29, 2011.

For the capital of the Republic of China, these competitions will generally become the largest and most significant sporting event in the entire history of the island state. All tickets for the Opening Ceremony, which will take place on August 19, were sold out a month ago.

Kinds of sports

Over the course of a week and a half, athletes will compete for 275 sets of awards in 22 sports. In addition to the fourteen compulsory events that are presented at each summer Universiade, the organizing committee added eight more. Six of them were previously held at collegiate games: archery, badminton, baseball, golf, taekwondo and weightlifting. Wushu and roller sports will make their debut at the Universiade this year.

Representatives of athletics will traditionally compete for the most awards - 50 sets of medals, in swimming athletes will compete for 42 sets, in taekwondo - for 23 sets.

Symbolism

The Chinese character that means “north” and is an abbreviation for Taipei was chosen for the Universiade logo. The lines as conceived by the designers reflect the city's constant desire for excellence and innovation. A mandatory element in the logo is five stars, which, like the Olympic rings, represent the five continents.

The official slogan of the competition is “For you. For young people".

The Universiade also has its own mascot - a black bear named Bravo. He was chosen as the mascot through an online vote. The white stripes on the chest are made in the shape of the letter V, which means victory. This letter is also the ribbon for the bear's gold medal.

Universiade

The Universiade also has its own hymn. The lyrics for the song Embrace the World with You were written by famous Chinese singer Chris Wu. In addition to national motifs, the composition uses a rumba rhythm. The song is about friendship and world peace.

Russian team

The University Sports Federation has set a target of 40 gold medals for this Universiade. To accomplish this task, famous and titled athletes, winners and prize-winners of world championships and Olympic games will be involved. So our team will be represented by divers Ilya Zakharov and Evgeny Kuznetsov, archer Tuyana Dashidozhieva, weightlifter Artem Okulov and others.

Athletics representatives will not be able to compete at the Universiade. The Russian Student Union was unable to register athletes to participate in the games.

“Our athletes will not compete at the Universiade in any capacity, nothing worked out. It was planned that 11 people would go there, but we never received any clarification from the International University Sports Federation on how neutral athletes would participate in the competition. It was not clear how to enter them into the database,” Sergei Seiranov, president of the Russian Sports Student Union, told TASS.
