Gazeta.Ru continues to inform readers every month about the selection of Russian athletes for the main competitions of next year - the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Last time we told you that the team continues to grow and has long had more than 200 people.

In March, another important psychological milestone was reached - 250 athletes. All thanks to the success of the women's water polo and handball teams. The girls won tickets based on the results of qualifying tournaments, which were the last chance to travel to Rio.

The two teams add up to a total of 27 people. But that is not all. In March, the results of qualifications in track cycling and equestrian sports were summed up. Eight Russians will now be able to pedal in Rio - two girls will compete in all sprint disciplines, two men qualified in the individual sprint, one of them will be lucky enough to compete in the keirin, and four cyclists will also compete for medals in the men's team pursuit.

Five Russians will be able to compete in equestrian competitions. Two qualified for dressage, and three more will form the eventing team, which will compete in both the team and individual events. For the first time since 1992, Russians were able to qualify for team equestrian competitions.

Let us add that we can already congratulate the fencers for winning the full quota of 16 people. Officially, the qualifications will end on April 4, but in the ratings by which the lists of participants are determined, no one will knock the Russians out of high positions.

Let's now start counting how many athletes can compete in Rio under the Russian flag. The largest representation is possible in swimming - a maximum of 42 different athletes, even taking into account the doping scandal of Yulia Efimova, will try to catch medals from the Olympic pool and the waters of the Atlantic Ocean, where the marathon swim will take place.

Next on the list are rowing (24 people for 4 quotas), volleyball (full quota of 24 people), shooting (20 quotas), fencing (16 people), handball (14 people), water polo (13 people), rowing kayaking and canoeing (13 people for 8 quotas), wrestling (12 quotas), cycling (12 people), artistic gymnastics (full quota of 10 people), weightlifting (full quota of 10 people), diving (10 people) , synchronized swimming (full quota of 9 people), boxing (8 quotas), rhythmic gymnastics (full quota of 7 people), sailing (6 people for 4 quotas), rowing slalom (full quota of 5 people), equestrianism ( 5 people), modern pentathlon (full quota of 4 people), archery (full women's quota of 3 people), taekwondo (3 people quota) and trampolining (full men's quota of 2 people).

In total, 272 Russian athletes have already definitely qualified for the Olympics. This figure is not final - Russia may be deprived of two quotas in weightlifting when the disqualification of a number of athletes is confirmed. In addition, the number of participants may decrease due to athletes who will compete in several disciplines of swimming, diving and shooting - where we counted to the maximum.

At the same time, we have not yet taken into account more than 80 athletes who have met the standards, but cannot compete due to the suspension of the entire team from international competitions. With them, the Russian representation in Rio would increase by almost a third.

Intermediate position in other sports

In some sports, quotas are allocated based on rankings based on athletes' performance in various tournaments. In track cycling and equestrian sports the results have been summed up, but in a number of disciplines they have not yet been done. However, no one will stop us from assessing the current situation in order to have an idea of what the future holds.

In most cases, the situation has not changed over the month. You can still hope for 12 quotas in judo, five in triathlon, three in women's road cycling, one men's pair in beach volleyball, and one female athlete in BMX and golf.

Somewhere the situation has changed for the worse. The mixed pair of badminton players and . The path to Rio is now closed for them, although there is still time to correct the situation - many tournaments will take place before May 5, where they can gain the missing rating points. The other four athletes who are nominally qualifying should also be more careful in holding on to their positions in the rankings.

The doping scandal with meldonium could not but affect the Olympic prospects of the Russians. If it is still possible to change it in the pool, it is not yet possible. Apart from her, only three tennis players and three tennis players are high in the ATP and WTA rankings and have consistently taken part in the Fed Cup. She can add to them - she definitely needs to take to the court against the Belarusians in the playoffs of the world group.

But there is progress in mountain biking. In the men's ranking of countries, Russia rose to 16th place, which allows us to hope for one ticket. And for women, the situation is such that they can go to Rio together.

In total, it turns out that if the end was put in the above sports right now, Russia would receive another 36 beds in the Olympic village. This does not take into account one quota in the women's road course, which falls on the time trial race, and Margarita Gasparyan.

What will happen in April

Already in April, the Russian delegation in Rio will be able to grow to 300 people. This month there will be many competitions that will answer the question of who is worthy of competing for Olympic medals and who is not.

The most interesting event will be the men's water polo qualifying tournament. Russia missed the last two Olympics, but now has a chance not to miss the third.

Among the participants in the competition in Trieste, Italy, there are only three European teams, which at the last championship of the Old World were higher than the Russians. In this case, four quotas are distributed at once. Group stage matches will take place from April 3 to April 7, followed by the quarter-finals the next day, the winners of which will travel to Brazil.

The Princess Sofia Sailing Cup will end on the 2nd. This is the last opportunity for Russians to take the missing quotas. By the penultimate day of the competition, there remains a real opportunity to get a quota in the men’s “Laser” class, but all is not lost in “Nacre 17”.

Test competitions in gymnastic sports will be held in Rio from April 16 to 24. For most Russians, they will be a test of future Olympic arenas, and for Susanna Kochesok there will be a struggle for a ticket to the real competition. One of them must finish in the top five to win a quota; the rules will not allow two to qualify at once.

Qualifying tournaments among boxers and wrestlers will take place in April. In total, Russians lack 11 quotas in these two sports. But if they cannot be won now, then there will be additional qualifying competitions. The boxing tournament in Samsun, Turkey, and the wrestling tournament in Zrenjanin, Serbia, are not the last opportunity.

The same can be said about the European selection for table tennis in Halmstad, Sweden. Ten places in men's and women's singles will be competed there. If you don’t manage to take the necessary places now, then you will have to rely on the world ranking, in which the Russians are not very high.

Let’s not forget about various competitions in badminton, tennis, golf, various disciplines of cycling, triathlon and beach volleyball. They will distribute places in the rankings, on the basis of which future Olympic participants will be determined.
